Our Prediction:

Olympiakos will win

Olympiakos – FK Krasnodar Match Prediction | 21-08-2019

They currently occupy the third place again, behind the same rivals in the same order, but there is a long way to go yet. Their previous opponent can only be described as a difficult one FC Porto, and after they lost to the Portuguese side at home by 0-1, they managed to pull a stunning comeback and win 2-3 in Portugal, going through on away goals. Krasnodar have the opportunity of being the third team from Russia to compete in the group stages of the Champions League this season, having finished in third place behind Zenit Saint Petersburg and Lokomotiv Moscow.

Meanwhile, forward Christian Cueva, who was loaned out to Brazilian side Santos FC, has made the move permanent for 6 million. Like Olympiacos, Krasnodar have made a number of additions to their squad. The most notable one would arguably be the 32-year-old Sweden international, striker Marcus Berg, who arrived on a free transfer from UAE side Al-Ain FC. They also signed midfielder Remy Cabella for 12 million, along with Tonny Vilhena (9m), Kaio (3m) and Younes Namli (2m).

The Russians, on the other hand, did well to upset Porto in the double-header, but it is well known that the Dragons chiefs were forced to sell several first-team regulars in the summer transfer window. Anyhow, we believe that Olympiakos are going to extend their winning run in the Champions League qualifiers on Wednesday evening. A man to watch in the home team will be Mathieu Valbuena, who joined the club earlier this summer.

Considering that home advantage will also be favoring Olympiacos in this one, it looks more than likely that Krasnodar will be making the trip back home with a defeat under their belt. On the other hand, Olympiacos are unbeaten in their last five clashes at this venue and have been clinching the win by sizable margins in almost each and every one them.

Despite losing the initial leg by a narrow 1-0 scoreline, the visitors turned things around in the return clash to keep the scores level at 3-3, following which they progressed on the away goals rule. FC Krasnodar made headlines in the last round when they came back from behind to dump the two-time Champions League winners FC Porto out of the tournament.

If their last two efforts at Karaiskakis Stadium are anything to go by, then the hosts have more than enough quality to do some damage against a Krasnodar back-line that shipped twice in Portugal. Add in the fact that the visitors thrived (in an offensive sense) when playing on the break against Porto and we can conclude that backing the goals to arrive in no small number on Wednesday is the way to go. In the betting, Over 2.5 Goals & Both Teams to Score stands out as a viable option. However, Olympiacos, who shipped 1.75 and 1.97 expected goals during the last round, looked very shaky against Basaksehir, while they also looked susceptible to the counter.

When playing Plzen at this venue, Wednesdays hosts scored four goals and created an impressive 3.55 expected goals for, while they were once again effective in the final third when hosting Basaksehir during the previous round. On that occasion, the Greek outfit scored twice and posted another encouraging expected-goals-for figure of 2.79. However, for all they impressed in the final third, Olympiacos struggled to contain their visitors, who after posting 1.75 expected goals for were very unfortunate not to score.

Our feeling is that FC Krasnodar may not find it easy to find the net against this Olympiacos side who we reckon will get the win and a maybe even keep a clean sheet as well. Were therefore tipping a very even match with a 1-0 winning score for Olympiacos at full-time.

Stadio Georgios Karaiskaki will be packed when Olympiakos and Krasnodar face each other in the first leg of the Champions League play-offs. The Thrylos impressed in back-to-back wins over Istanbul Basaksehir and they must be high on confidence ahead of Wednesdays football match against Krasnodar. The Greeks are a real force to be reckoned with at home and seeing that they crushed Viktoria Plzen 4-0 in Piraeus earlier in the process, we are tempted to put our money on Pedro Martins troops.
